2008: A Trade Supplier Starts in Pinetown
Jameson Tools began trading in 2008 from Pinetown, Durban, with a clear focus on the everyday needs of local workshops. The early range was practical and direct, covering hand tools, fastening items and basic workshop essentials for tradesmen who needed reliable stock without wasting time.
From the start, the approach was hands-on. Orders were packed for local collection, advice was given over the counter and the team spent time understanding how fitters, mechanics, contractors and small workshop owners actually use their tools. That early habit of listening shaped the business from day one, and it still does.
2009 to 2011: Building a Proper Stock Range
As more customers came through from New Germany, Westmead and surrounding areas, the range widened to suit more types of trade work. The business added more hand tools, abrasives, drill accessories, storage items and day-to-day consumables so customers could source several lines in one stop. It made sense for busy workshops that did not want to juggle multiple suppliers.
- 2009: stock lists were widened for fitters, maintenance teams and small engineering shops
- 2010: consumables supply became a bigger part of the offer, including repeat-use items for regular workshop running
- 2011: the team refined replacement matching so customers could source a direct fit or practical equivalent without guesswork
By then, the business had become known for straight answers and consistent supply. If a part was suitable, it was recommended. If it was not, the team said so and suggested a better option.
2012 to 2015: Training Support Becomes Part of the Service
From 2012 onwards, Jameson Tools began pairing product supply with training resources. This was not about selling more for the sake of it. It was about helping users work safely, reduce waste and make better use of the tools they had already bought. That mattered to new apprentices, independent operators and DIY users setting up at home.
In 2013, on-site tool inductions and usage guidance became part of the service offering for selected customers. The focus was simple: how to use the equipment, how to look after it, and how to keep a workshop running when load-shedding or a tight deadline gets in the way. A well-run workshop saves money, and that is still the point.
- practical guidance for first-time users and new workshop teams
- tool care advice to extend service life in dusty, humid and high-use environments
- support for setting up clearer stock lists and repeat order patterns
2016 to 2018: Workshop Kits and Setup Advice Take Shape
As the business grew, more customers asked for bundled starter kits instead of buying item by item. In response, Jameson Tools developed starter kit bundles and workshop setup advice for new garages, maintenance rooms and mobile teams. The idea was to save time at the start of a project and avoid missing important items that only become obvious later.
By 2017, workshop kit planning had become a regular service, especially for customers opening new spaces or refreshing old ones. Matthew Petersen and the workshop solutions side of the business focused on practical layouts, usable stock combinations and tools that matched the work being done. It was never about overcomplicating things. It was about getting the basics right first.
Coastal humidity, workshop dust and a fair amount of wear and tear all influence tool choice in Durban. The team learnt to recommend items that could handle local conditions, not just look good on paper.
2019 to 2021: Courier Delivery and Trade Account Support Expand Reach
By 2019, the business had grown beyond its immediate local base and courier delivery coordination became a bigger part of daily work. Customers in Durban North, Umhlanga, Hillcrest and further afield could now receive stock reliably, which helped tradespeople keep moving even when they could not get to Pinetown in person.
During these years, trade account support also became more structured. Businesses wanted regular replenishment, simpler ordering and clearer records for recurring consumables. Jameson Tools responded with better stock list standardising and more organised follow-up, which made repeat ordering less of a headache.
- nationwide courier delivery support for regular and once-off orders
- trade account assistance for workshops with monthly or seasonal needs
- stock matching for replacement items, especially when original parts are no longer easy to find
The team found that the better the admin, the faster the workshop. That sounds obvious, but it saves a lot of time in practice.
2022 to Today: A Practical Partner for Workshops Across South Africa
Today, Jameson Tools supports customers from its base in Pinetown with a mix of tool supply, workshop planning and training support. The business serves local trade areas including Pinetown, New Germany, Westmead, Hillcrest, Durban North and Umhlanga, while also sending orders nationwide by courier.
The team now includes Sibusiso Mthembu as Managing Director, with Anele Dlamini overseeing operations, Ruan Naidoo leading technical sales, Zanele Khumalo coordinating training, Matthew Petersen managing workshop solutions and Nokuthula Ndlovu heading customer support. That mix of roles means customers can get help with kit planning, consumables replenishment, starter bundles, seasonal refreshes and on-site inductions without being passed around. It is practical support from people who understand the work.
There is still a strong focus on the basics: honest advice, useful stock, fair turnaround times and support that works for South African conditions. Whether a customer is fitting out a new workshop or replacing worn items after years of use, the aim is to keep the process clear and useful.
